Erika Hughes understands performance as a technology to explore how people understand the world in which they live. She collaborates with actors as well as historians, scientists, activists, veterans, students, makers, medics, chaplains, soldiers, sailors, and citizens on a range of types of performance - from applied to experimental, sometimes novel and sometimes traditional. Mindfulness practices are an integral part of her creative process. She frequently makes site-specific performance and has worked in a Victorian prison, on a WWI-era warship, and within a 3-D planetarium.
Since 2013 she has served as artistic director of The Veterans Project, a performance series that features military veterans sharing oral histories alongside a curated range of video and visual material. She also works in interactive media and is the author of Quest, a Twine-based series that invites the audience to participate in the performance of daily life, which has been performed in Austin TX, Milwaukee WI, and Portsmouth UK.
Her work has been seen on stages in Germany, Israel, Pakistan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Please see the drop-down menu in the toolbar above - under "Performance" - to explore a selection of performances she has directed and devised.
